The Problem
Many homes from this era have older, often defective or degraded insulation types in their cavities:
- Fibre Insulation: Prone to slumping due to moisture absorption or gravity, creating significant gaps and cold spots.
- Urea-formaldehyde Foam: Often disintegrates over time, sometimes to dust, leaving your cavity virtually empty. (Note: You might choose to rephrase the “carcinogenic” point to “chemical degradation” for website prose, e.g., “concerns over chemical degradation and breakdown over time”).
- Loose Polystyrene Bead: Easily lost when cavities are opened for renovations (windows, doors, lintels, gas boxes), leading to voids.
